My 15 Minutes of Fame Experience
I was included in "A Fiery Renaissance ~ Modern potters are reshaping centuries-old ceramic arts, signaling a bold new era for American craft." featured in the January / February 2023 issue of Veranda magazine, published by Hearst. And it all began with an email from Sara Clarkof Veranda! It was a fascinating experience - including the call sheet used by my photographer, Shea, and a short video of the photo shoot.
It began with an email from Sara Clark of Veranda magazine on September 26, 2022:
"Hi Denise,
I hope you are well! My name is Sara Clark and I work for Veranda Magazine. I am reaching out as I am working on a Jan/ Feb issue story about potters looking to the past for inspiration, from technique to design. We are looking at a few different American potters and would love to include you!
We will have one of our writers reach out to interview you soon about your work and the history of Redware Sgraffito, but was wondering if it is possible to call in a few of your pieces to shoot in our Studio in Birmingham, Al? We shoot Oct. 5th and 6th, so we’ll need them shipped here before then, but can send you label, etc and can return them directly after the shoot! .......
Sara Clark
Assistant Style & Market Editor
Veranda Magazine"
After a phone call with Sara I sent 12+ pieces to Alabama, most of them appear in the article. Veranda also wanted a professional photo of me at work but I didn't have one so they sent a photographer to me. I had to send them photos of the studio - BUT I had to clean it up first! Then they responded with what they wanted to see or have removed and I made the changes, staged the pottery and sent them new photos. They sent a wonderful Philadelphia-based photographer to do the shoot - Shea Winter Roggio - small world that it is he is the nephew of jewelers I have done shows with!
Check out the "Call Sheet" with the photographer instructions - the photo shoot took about three hours.
